A roller coaster of emotions

Today was a day full of several diversified emotions.
Our first step today was the lutheran school of hope in ramallah where pastor Imad shared
with us the problems faced by this school being built in an industrial area where a lot of loud noises and bad smells are present. We also had to remember how important education is for new generations. Because it needs a lot of strength to not reply to the conflict of their reality with anger. Around noon we went to visit the graveyard of the former president of palestine which had several symbols all around to resemble the palestinian reality, such as the 3 palestinian flags raised to its side as a reminder of the 3 official funerals he had held in each of France, Egypt and Palestine as well as the moving water in the shape of the letter U used to resemble his movable cascket to explain that one day his wish of being buried in jerusalem will be fullfilled. After that we were taken to visit the great arabic poet Mahmoud Darwiesh in which we also got to see his graveyard and his precious belongings and creative accomplishments. It was impressive how incisive and intensive the words of this man seem. Of course after we saw all these interesting facts we were taken to he city center in Ramallah to see how life inside the so called economical capital of palestine is. After such a long, loud, crowded day in a city like ramallah we had to get through the checkpoint again. A large portion of our group decided to join the palestinians for support and to gain the experience of how the reality of their lives actually is. And in comparison to travelling outside of the country to any other different country we go through security checks but as for the palestinains they are forced to move from one city to another in their own homeland through checlpoints full of obstacles. As sad as this may seem I was very surprised by the mix of emotions that the people were going through and by that I mean fear, anxiety, patience, hope, anger, sadness and recklessness. Three hours of constant humiliation because of the low method of behavior used by the Israelis towards the Palestinians and in this case also us Germans delayed our way back to Talitha. For some it took more time to realise what happened than for others. Just because of the kindness of the Talitha Kumi Team we were having our delayed dinner. Instead of having to spend almost 30 mins to cross a usual checkpoint, we spent 3 long hours waiting for anyone to let us through. Finally after everything we’ve experienced during only 1 day. The best way for us to face what we saw was to end our day with a simple prayer just outisde between the calming trees of Talitha Kumi. Finishing this with a hug and starting something new with another one as well.

The hot weather

The day began very early and we headed directly through a checkpoint to Jericho. It was very hot and we reached the Sea Level, we saw the desert and the Israeli settlement too. In Jericho we went for a 15 minute walk to buy some fruits, and the bananas it´s known for.  After that we walked to the tree of Zacharias, and we discussed his story. Then we went to the mountain of temptation, where a church was built. We had a very beautiful view, because the church was built very high, so we were able to see Jordan. After that we got hungry, and went to a restaurant, where we ate delicious food, which was maqluba (upside down). Finally we went to the dead sea, where it was too hot. We swam in the sea, but also in the pool. After this long day we came back to the hotel with a sunburn on most of the group. In the evening we ate dinner, and played games and ended it with a prayer.

Bethlehem & Refugee Camp

We started the day visiting the Dheisheh Refugee Camp, located south of Bethlehem, where we talked with a man, who grew up in the camp. He told us the stories of the refugees, their eviction from their orignal homes and their struggle for the right to return. After a small walk through we took the Bus to the Nativity Church in Bethlehem, where we saw the place where Jesus was born. We also visited the Milk Grotto. Then we had a rest to eat the wonderful falafel in the shadows of the trees of the manger square.
After splitting into small groups some of us went to see and try the crafting of olive-wood statues, bowls and other souvenirs. Others went to eat the traditional palestinian dessert „knafeh“ or buy beautiful scarfs. Some also enjoyed the fantastic view of the city in a panorama restaurant. After returning to Talitha Kumi and having the – as always perfect – dinner we had a free evening and could spend it however we wanted.. Some of us played card games, some sang songs together some went to bed early. 😉

Exploring the surrounding area

After the germans finally got some sleep, we started the day with some good breakfast. Then we had a look around Talitha Kumi and went on a very long hike to the winery Cremisan. On our way to Cremisan we took a break from the sun and the heat, as we enjoyed our Falafel in the shadows. When we finally arrived at the winery, we got to take a look behind the curtains. We basically melted on our way from Cremisan to the lutheran church of Beit Jala. There we were provided with cold drinks and Ashraf told us more about the palestinian situation. From there on we had free time until dinner. Most of us spent this time in a restaurant with our first palestinian shisha 🙂 or coffee, while others used the time to get some rest from our long hike. The dinner was really good, and we ended the day with some co-operation games and a short song and prayer. We are looking forward to the next days here in palestine.

The beginning

Our day started really early when we left home at 3 am, to get to the airpot in Munich.
After a short waiting session at the airport, where we watched the sun go up, we took the flight to Vienna, where we waited another two hours and then flew to Tel Aviv.
Because we woke up very early or some of us didn´t sleep at all, most of us slept the whole flight. When we got food, everyone was awake. At 14.50 we finally arrived in Tel Aviv. After we went through security, where we had to answer some questions, we went outside, where the heat surprised us.
We drove with a bus to Beit Jala, where the Palasinians greeted us heartly.
We got more than enough food, which was very delicious. Afterwards we played some games to get to know each other. It was a very long day and we are looking forward to the next days.

Pray for each other

Pray for each other

Dear Lord, thank you for being the one that is always there for us, we come from the Holy Land, from the place that you have lived and died for our salvation. We would first like to thank you for the nice people we have had the chance to meet in this conference. They have made it home away from home for us, so for that we are thankful.

We would like to pray for our German partners, friends and companions to keep them healthy, safe and sound. We would like to pray for them for the work that they are doing with us and for our Palestinian situation. We would like to pray for them so that God can give them the strength and the ability to continue their work against hate and racism. We would like to pray for them to make the gap between the rich and the poor people get less.

We want to pray to make Germans calm down and relax, because it´s okay not to be on time sometimes.

Christie

Dear Lord, we pray for the families and people in Palestine whose land was taken away and who have borders between their neighbours, families, friends and themselves. Give them hope and strength to carry on, and believe in peace and freedom. Give water to people who are thirsty and goods to the ones in need. give warm thoughts to the ones who are afraid and help them to achieve a life in peace and harmony for everyone. We pray especially for our friends from Palestine and Jordan, please keep them save on their way home.

Give them support when they are at school, university or work and help them educate themselves to built a better, bright future.
Amen. Allah iberikom.

Finally – Shopping in Munich!

Finally – Shopping in Munich!

Thursday, 2017/08/10

In between a visit to the BMW World and eating the best Falafel in Munich it was all about Shopping, Shopping, Shopping.
The last money was spent on new clothes and one could even say there was no chocolate left in the supermarkets in Bad Tölz.

In our final reflection we were thinking about what we want to take with us – what we want to leave behind – What is expecting me when I get home and are there any changes of perception because of all the impressions we had.

We finally had another party, using our last energy to dance off.

10 years of partnership

10 years of partnership

„10 years of youth meeting with Palestine“

10 years of youth meetings
What is the summary of those 10 years?

Let me point out 4 topics related to the photos we just saw:

International youth meetings are sponsored of course by the Lutheran Church, and also by the German government. Every time before the program, we have to discuss aims with our sponsors. Afterwards, we have to evaluate what young people learned when they participated in this programs.

1. Palestine and Bavaria – culture and society
We learn about culture and society. We find hospitality where we wouldn’t have expected. We experience familiy cohesion. But we also learn about the problems of each other’s society. We discuss about environment protection as well as for example the school system. And above all, we learn from each other what is important to young people and what they want for the future. We learn about our fears, hopes, values and beliefs.

2. Politics
I could say a lot about politics. What I want to emphasize is on one hand our solidarity with our ELCJHL partners – with our Christian brothers and sisters – and the Palestinian people, also in terms of human rights. And on the other hand, I am proud that we as Germans are always trying – together with our partners – to fulfil our responsibility for our history and the Jewish people. Anyone who visited the Dachau Concentration Camp memorial site and experienced for example the conversation with Max Mannheimer or the White Rose memorial in Munich knows how important and touching this was for everyone.

3. Religion
In the programs the young people learn a lot about their own faith. It is moving to visit the places of the Bible in the Holy Land. At the same time, the encounter with different piety styles calls for their own way. And, last but not least, the initiation of a society in which Judaism, Christianity and Islam live together is impetus for the interreligious dialogue in Germany.

4. Partnership
Partnership means friedship. Partnership means to respect each other respectfully. It means to admit to the foreign, to the other. This sometimes means being able to withstand each other and I am sure, Dafer and Marya, that our way of reflection in the middle of the night has sometimes got on your nerves. Partnership also means to learn how to prepare delicious meals as well as a real garlicbread! Partnership means missing and looking forward to seeing you again.

Thank you for your attention. On the next 10 years of youth meetings!

Enjoying Bavarian nature

Enjoying Bavarian nature

Tuesday, 2017/08/08

On Tuesday, we went to lake Kirchsee where we had a lot of fun swimming with our friends. We also had a lot of fun playing card games with each other. Later at night, we had a nice time watching ‚Little Miss Sunshine‘ with popcorn, nachos and coke, which is a nice movie to watch all together. Then we sat to hang out all together with each other and went to sleep (more or less…)

Just another journey

Just another Journey

On Monday was the time for the big farewell in Neukirchen. After breakfast and cleaning the rooms we went outside to send good wishes with balloons. With one last goodbye-hug the first part of the group left to the train. The other part left some time later with the cars.

After we had arrived in Bad Tölz and settled in, we drove to the Marktstraße, had some icecream and went down to the river Isar and enjoyed the evening.
